Curated by Erik Verhagen
Exhibition: May 10 – September 7, 2014

Exhibition in New York

Ed Ruscha. Books & Co.
Gagosian Gallery, Madison Avenue, New York
Ed Ruscha’s work has profoundly influenced countless modern artists, but his artist books — such as Twentysix Gasoline Stations, Every Building on the Sunset Strip, Thirtyfour Parking Lots in Los Angeles, and A Few Palm Trees — offer a unique opportunity to trace that influence directly to the near and far corners of the modern art world. For decades, a broad spectrum of artists have produced their own small books revisiting, rebelling against, and responding to the American painter and photographer’s idiosyncratic collections.
Now, Ruscha’s artist books and the fascinatingly kindred works they inspired are the focus of a new exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery and a book — Various Small Books: Referencing Various Small Books by Ed Ruscha from MIT Press — both of which showcase Ruscha’s materials alongside the numerous books they influenced, including my book Twentysix Gasoline Stations, Every Building on the Sunset Strip, Thirtyfour Parking Lots, Nine Swimming Pools, A Few Palm Trees, No Small Fires as well as the Artists’ Books Cooperative’s collective project ABCED.

Exhibition in New York

Use Me, Abuse Me
New York Photo Festival
Use Me, Abuse Me begins with Erik Kessels’ a posteriori observation that easy access to photography tools and software results in quicker, more facile modes of image production, consumption and disposal. Perhaps a condition of this state, a plethora of photographers and image-makers are experimenting with pre-existing images and using them within their own work on an unprecedented scale. Photographs are variously collected, reinterpreted, cut, copied, pasted and generally abused.
Erik Kessels’ show is about how images and image-making technology influence artists and photographers. Use Me, Abuse Me explores several questions, including: Where will image-making take us? Will all existing photography be endlessly recycled? Will we soon see more photographers taking fewer photographs? How far can we stretch the medium of photography?

Exhibition in Toronto

The Brothel Without Walls
Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival
University of Toronto Art Centre
In 1964 Marshall McLuhan wrote of the photograph as “the brothel without walls” just one year after creating a center for culture and technology at the University of Toronto, where he was a professor for over 30 years. McLuhan described photographs as “dreams that money can buy” which could be “hugged and thumbed more easily than public prostitutes.” The exhibition The Brothel Without Walls considers McLuhan’s metaphor within today’s global village, where it appears that the illusions images create are often preferable to reality.

Exhibition in San Francisco

Joachim Schmid, Selected Photoworks 1982–2007
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
July 28 – October 14, 2007
Opening Party: Friday, July 27, 8–11 pm

“A self-described professional looker, Berlin-based artist Joachim Schmid has scoured archives, flea markets, the streets, and internet webcams for the raw materials out of which he creates his wry, sardonic, yet revealing works of found photography. He invites us to re-see photographic history, questioning the nature of authorship and the role of the photographer. This mid-career survey includes Schmid’s 25-year signature series, Bilder von der Straße (Pictures from the Street), as well as new multi-channel digital photo pieces. Exhibition accompanied by a monograph.
Organized by the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York, and The Photographers’ Gallery, London”

Exhibition in London

Joachim Schmid Selected Photoworks 1982—2007
The Photographers‘ Gallery
April 20 — June 7, 2007
Private View: April 19, 6.30—8.30 pm

“For the last 25 years Joachim Schmid (b. 1955) has challenged the traditional and prevailing idea of ‘art photography‘. Instead, he has championed the importance of photographs that are produced and seen everyday; ranging from passport photos, to high street studio portraits, ID cards and, more recently, the Internet.
In Bilder von der Strasse (Pictures from the Street, ongoing since 1982) Schmid has collected discarded photographs from around the world, revealing the bizarre in the ordinary and overlooked. The exhibition also includes Photogenetic Drafts (1991). Using negatives a studio photographer had cut in half to prevent their further use, Schmid has created ironic and unsettling photo-collages that play on the predictability of the commercial studio portrait. The exhibition will premier two multi-channel digital photo installations, Tausend Himmel (Thousand Skies, 2005) and Menschen und Dinge (People and Things, 2006).
Schmid‘s interest in collecting and archiving photographs reflects a concern with photography as an all-encompassing discourse that runs throughout the public and private spheres of our lives.
The exhibition has been organized in collaboration with the Tang Museum at Skidmore College (Saratoga Springs, New York).
Two publications have been produced to coincide with the exhibition and are available from the Gallery Bookshop. Tausend Himmel, published by The Photographers‘ Gallery, is a full colour 64-page artist booklet featuring images from the project of the same title; and a monograph, Joachim Schmid Photoworks 1982—2007, published by Photoworks (UK), Tang Museum (USA) and Steidl (Germany), with support from The Photographers‘ Gallery and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.”
