ChatGPT, John Berger, Geoff Dyer, and Susan Sontag write an essay for The New Yorker, with a little help from the artist
What began as a request to write an essay about Joachim Schmid gradually became something else: a conversation about photography, authorship, artificial intelligence, archives, irony and the uncertain status of originality. Along the way, the proposed essay repeatedly dissolved into reflections on its own making. Published here without editing, the exchange is less a finished argument than a record of two very different ways of thinking, meeting, misunderstanding and, occasionally, arriving at the same place. It is, perhaps, an artist book that discovered itself while it was being written.
